🌸 Zephyranthes brachyandra Care

Zephyranthes brachyandra is a charming, bulbous perennial belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. It is native to parts of South America, including Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, where it grows in subtropical habitats.

It produces narrow, grass-like green leaves that emerge from small underground bulbs. Its most attractive feature is its delicate, funnel-shaped pink flowers, which appear on individual flower stalks. The flower colour is often more intense towards the centre.

Commonly grouped with the rain lilies, this species can produce a lovely display of flowers following periods of rainfall or increased moisture.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade.

  • Several hours of direct sunlight encourage healthy growth and flowering.

  • In very hot climates, some afternoon shade is beneficial.

  • Can be grown in containers or garden beds.

💧 Watering

  • Water regularly while the plant is actively growing.

  • Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Increased moisture during warm weather can encourage flowering.

  • Reduce watering when the foliage begins to die back during dormancy.

  • Avoid leaving the bulbs in permanently waterlogged soil.

🪴 Soil

  • Prefers fertile, loose and well-draining soil.

  • A mixture of quality potting soil, compost and coarse sand or perlite works well.

  • Good drainage is essential to prevent bulb rot.

  • Can be grown successfully in containers and rock gardens.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Prefers warm, subtropical growing conditions.

  • Protect from severe frost and prolonged freezing temperatures.

  • Foliage may die back during colder periods.

  • Allow the bulbs to rest naturally during dormancy.

🌸 Flowering

  • Produces attractive pink, funnel-shaped flowers.

  • Flowers have six petal-like segments, with colour often becoming deeper towards the centre.

  • Flowering generally occurs during the warmer growing season.

  • Rainfall or increased watering after a dry period can stimulate flowering, a characteristic shared by many rain lilies.

🌿 Feeding

  • Apply a balanced, diluted bulb fertiliser during active growth.

  • A light application of compost can help maintain soil fertility.

  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages foliage rather than flowering.

  • Stop feeding when the plant enters dormancy.

🌱 Propagation

  • Easily propagated by separating offsets from established bulbs.

  • Divide overcrowded clumps during dormancy or before active growth begins.

  • Replant bulbs in well-draining soil.

  • Can also be grown from seed, although seedlings may take several years to flower.

🌸 Boho Blooms Growing Tip

Zephyranthes brachyandra is a lovely addition to a bulb collection, particularly for its delicate pink flowers. Give it plenty of sunlight, regular moisture during active growth and a well-draining growing medium. Allow the foliage to die back naturally rather than removing it too early, as the leaves help replenish the underground bulbs for the next growing season.

Interesting botanical fact: The common name Rain Lily comes from the tendency of many Zephyranthes species to produce flowers shortly after rainfall. Their flowers can appear surprisingly quickly following a period of dry weather.

Taxonomy note: Zephyranthes brachyandra (Baker) Backer is the accepted botanical name. It has also been known by the synonym Habranthus brachyandrus.
