🌿 Piaranthus geminatus subsp. geminatus Care

Piaranthus geminatus subsp. geminatus is a small, clumping stapeliad succulent from southern Africa. It produces fleshy, angular stems that spread to form compact groups. Its unusual star-shaped flowers are a particular attraction for stapeliad collectors.

☀️ Light
Provide bright light with several hours of direct sun. Morning sun is ideal. In very hot conditions, some afternoon shade can prevent scorching while still providing enough light for flowering.

💧 Watering
Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Water less during winter and keep the plant fairly dry during prolonged cold periods. Avoid leaving the soil continually moist.

🪴 Soil
Use a very well-draining, gritty succulent mix. Adding pumice, perlite, coarse sand or other mineral material helps prevent excess moisture around the roots.

🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm conditions and should be protected from frost and prolonged cold, wet weather. Keep it somewhere sheltered during cold winters.

🌸 Flowering
The flowers have the distinctive appearance associated with Piaranthus and are adapted for fly pollination. Good light and appropriate seasonal watering can encourage flowering.

🌱 Feeding
Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Heavy feeding is unnecessary.

✂️ Propagation
Propagation is generally straightforward from stem cuttings. Allow a cutting to callus for several days before planting it in dry, well-draining soil. Begin watering lightly once roots have developed.

The key to growing Piaranthus geminatus subsp. geminatus successfully is excellent drainage and careful watering. Let the plant dry properly between waterings and provide plenty of light and airflow.
