🌿 Piaranthus geminatus subsp. decorus Care

Piaranthus geminatus subsp. decorus is a small stapeliad succulent that forms low, clumping groups of fleshy, four-angled stems. It is particularly appreciated by collectors for its unusual, star-shaped flowers, which can appear in clusters and have intricate markings.

☀️ Light
Provide bright light to several hours of direct sunlight each day. Morning sun is particularly beneficial. In very hot conditions, some afternoon shade can help prevent scorching.

💧 Watering
Water during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry completely between waterings. During winter or cooler periods, reduce watering considerably. Avoid frequent small amounts of water, as constantly damp soil can lead to rot.

🪴 Soil
Plant in a very well-draining, gritty succulent mix. A combination of succulent soil with pumice, perlite or coarse sand works well. Good drainage is essential.

🌡️ Temperature
Enjoys warm conditions and should be protected from frost and prolonged cold temperatures. Keep it drier during cold weather.

🌸 Flowers
The flowers are a highlight of this species, with the characteristic intricate appearance found in Piaranthus. As with many stapeliads, the flowers are adapted to fly pollination.

🌱 Feeding
Feed lightly during the active growing season using a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive fertilisation.

✂️ Propagation
It can be propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to dry and callus before placing them into a dry, gritty growing medium. Once roots develop, watering can gradually be increased.

🌿 Growing Tip
This is a succulent that benefits from a good dry period between waterings. Plenty of light, excellent drainage and good airflow will help keep the stems compact and reduce the risk of rot.
