🌸 Merwilla plumbea Care

Merwilla plumbea, commonly known as Blue Squill, Wild Squill or Blue Mountain Lily (Blouberglelie), is a striking South African indigenous bulbous perennial belonging to the Asparagaceae family.

It is a deciduous geophyte with a large, rounded bulb covered in thick, protective, papery brown to purplish scales. During spring, broad, tapering green leaves emerge in a rosette. Tall flower stalks carry dense clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in shades of pale blue, violet-blue and occasionally lilac.

It occurs naturally across eastern southern Africa, including South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini, growing in grasslands, rocky slopes and moist areas near streams.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light

  • Prefers full sun for strong growth and flowering.

  • Tolerates partial shade, particularly in warmer regions.

  • A sunny position with good air circulation is ideal.

💧 Watering

  • Water generously during active growth in spring and summer.

  • Keep the soil moderately moist while the leaves are growing, without allowing it to become waterlogged.

  • As the foliage begins to yellow and die back towards autumn, gradually reduce watering.

  • Keep the dormant bulb relatively dry during winter.

🪴 Soil

  • Requires well-draining soil.

  • A sandy, loamy growing medium with some organic matter is suitable.

  • A mixture containing coarse sand, fine gravel and quality potting soil works well.

  • Avoid heavy, water-retentive soil, as excess moisture can cause bulb rot.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Adapted to a range of South African climatic conditions.

  • Tolerates light frost and can be grown outdoors in suitable Highveld gardens.

  • Protect from severe frost, particularly when grown in containers.

  • A dry winter dormancy is important for healthy growth.

🌸 Flowering

  • Produces impressive upright flower stalks, sometimes reaching approximately 1 m tall.

  • Flowers are small, star-shaped and arranged in dense clusters.

  • Colours range from pale blue to deep violet-blue, with occasional lilac forms.

  • Flowering generally occurs during spring and early summer.

  • The flower stalk may appear before or alongside the leaves.

🌿 Feeding

  • Apply a light amount of balanced organic fertiliser as new growth emerges.

  • Compost can be incorporated around the growing area.

  • Avoid heavy fertilising, particularly during dormancy.

🌱 Propagation

  • Propagate from seed or offsets produced around mature bulbs.

  • Sow fresh seeds in a well-draining growing medium.

  • Seedlings grow slowly and may take approximately three to four years to flower.

  • Separate offsets during the dormant period and replant carefully.

  • Avoid unnecessary disturbance, as established bulbs can take time to settle and flower again.

🌼 Boho Blooms Growing Tip

Merwilla plumbea is a wonderful choice for indigenous gardens, rockeries and large containers. Allow the foliage to grow naturally during summer so the bulb can replenish its energy reserves.

One of the most important aspects of growing this species successfully is respecting its seasonal cycle. Keep it watered during active summer growth and allow it to rest during winter.

🌿 Interesting Botanical Facts

  • The species name plumbea refers to the lead-blue colour of its flowers.

  • Its large bulb is often partly exposed above ground and protected by thick, papery scales.

  • It is a long-lived plant that can form attractive clumps over time.

  • The flowers attract bees and other insect pollinators.

  • It was previously widely known as Scilla natalensis.

⚠️ Important: The bulb is poisonous if consumed. Keep it away from children and pets.

Conservation note: Wild populations have been affected by harvesting for traditional medicinal use. Purchase nursery-propagated plants rather than wild-collected bulbs.

Taxonomy note: Merwilla plumbea (Lindl.) Speta is the accepted botanical name. It belongs to the family Asparagaceae, although older horticultural references often list it under Hyacinthaceae.
