🌱 Haworthia cymbiformis var. incurvula MBB6892 (NE Roffs Rock) Care
Haworthia cymbiformis var. incurvula MBB6892, from Roffs Rock in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, is a small, slow-growing succulent belonging to the Asphodelaceae family.
It forms compact, stemless rosettes with numerous soft, fleshy green leaves. The leaves are relatively narrow and taper towards their tips, which characteristically curve inward. Their translucent, window-like leaf surfaces allow light to enter the leaf tissue, an adaptation commonly found in Haworthias.
The rosettes generally remain small, around 2.5–8 cm across, and gradually produce offsets to form attractive clusters.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
-
Prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade.
-
Gentle morning sunlight is beneficial.
-
Protect from harsh afternoon sun, which can cause leaf discolouration and scorching.
-
Avoid deep shade, as insufficient light can result in stretched growth.
-
A bright position with good airflow is ideal.
💧 Watering
-
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings.
-
Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.
-
Water more sparingly during very hot weather if the plant becomes dormant.
-
Reduce watering during cooler winter conditions.
-
Avoid water collecting in the centre of the rosette for extended periods.
🪴 Soil
-
Requires a well-draining growing medium.
-
A mineral-based succulent mix containing pumice, perlite, coarse grit and a small amount of organic material works well.
-
Use a pot with drainage holes.
-
Avoid heavy, compacted soil that retains too much moisture.
🌡️ Temperature
-
Prefers moderate to warm growing conditions.
-
Protect from extreme heat and prolonged frost.
-
Good ventilation is important, particularly during hot and humid weather.
-
It can tolerate cooler winter conditions when kept relatively dry.
🌸 Flowering
-
Produces slender flower stalks carrying small, tubular, whitish flowers.
-
The flowers are relatively delicate and typical of the Haworthia genus.
-
Mature plants may flower during favourable growing conditions.
🌿 Feeding
-
Feed lightly with a diluted, balanced succulent fertiliser during active growth.
-
Apply sparingly, as Haworthias do not require heavy feeding.
-
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth.
🌱 Propagation
-
Easily propagated from offsets that develop around the base of the mother plant.
-
Carefully separate well-developed offsets, preferably when they have their own roots.
-
Allow damaged areas to dry before replanting.
-
Can also be propagated from seed, although this is a slower process.
🌵 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
Haworthia cymbiformis var. incurvula is best grown in a bright, partially shaded position rather than exposed to intense direct sunlight. Its naturally compact rosette and inward-curving leaves make it an attractive collector’s plant. Avoid overwatering and use a mineral-rich growing medium to keep the roots healthy.
Interesting botanical fact: The name incurvula refers to the inward-curving leaf tips, one of the characteristic features used to distinguish this variety. Its natural habitat includes the Eastern Cape, where it grows in dry conditions among thicket vegetation.
Taxonomy note: Kew currently accepts Haworthia cymbiformis var. incurvula as a recognised variety. Its earlier name was Haworthia incurvula. MBB6892 is a collector’s field accession number, not part of the botanical name.
