🌿 Euphorbia stapelioides ‘Variegated’ Care

Euphorbia stapelioides ‘Variegated’, commonly sold under the former name Monadenium stapelioides f. variegata, is an unusual and attractive clumping succulent prized for its beautifully patterned foliage and distinctive stems.

Botanical name clarification: The variegated plant commonly sold as Monadenium stapelioides f. variegata is generally identified as Euphorbia neostapelioides f. variegata, now placed under Euphorbia succulenta in some taxonomic treatments. It should not be confused with the true South African Euphorbia stapelioides.

The variegated form develops a fleshy underground rootstock with numerous upright to spreading stems, eventually forming an attractive rounded clump. Its leaves are particularly decorative, displaying cream and green stripes, often with beautiful pink or reddish margins. The pink colouring can become more pronounced under suitable light conditions.
🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light

Prefers bright filtered light to partial sun. Gentle morning sunlight encourages attractive variegation and pink colouring. Protect from harsh afternoon sunlight, particularly during hot South African summers, as the cream-coloured sections of the leaves are more susceptible to scorching.

💧 Watering

Water during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly rather than giving frequent small amounts.

Reduce watering considerably during winter when the plant enters semi-dormancy. Avoid keeping the soil constantly moist, as the fleshy rootstock is susceptible to rot.

🪴 Soil

Requires a very well-draining, airy growing medium. A mixture containing pumice, coarse sand, fine gravel and a small amount of succulent potting soil works well.

A relatively wide pot is preferable to accommodate its spreading growth habit and underground rootstock.

🌡️ Temperature

Prefers warm growing conditions and should be protected from frost. It appreciates good airflow and protection from prolonged cold, wet weather.

🌸 Flowering

Produces small, unusual yellowish-green flowers near the growing tips. Although the flowers are relatively inconspicuous, they add seasonal interest to the plant.

🌱 Feeding

Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth at the expense of healthy development.

✂️ Maintenance

This species naturally produces additional stems and gradually forms a dense, rounded clump. Remove damaged or unwanted growth when necessary.

🌿 Propagation

Can be propagated through stem cuttings or division of established clumps.

Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before placing cuttings into a dry, well-draining growing medium. Vegetative propagation is recommended to preserve the attractive variegation.

🍂 Dormancy

The plant may enter a period of semi-dormancy during winter. Growth can slow down, and some leaves may drop. Reduce watering during this period and gradually resume as new growth appears.

⚠️ Important

Like other Euphorbias, this plant produces milky latex sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Avoid direct contact and keep it away from children and pets.

🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip

The cream, green and pink colouring makes this variegated Euphorbia particularly attractive. Unlike many sun-loving succulents, it appreciates some protection from intense afternoon sunlight.

For the best results, provide bright filtered light, gentle morning sun, excellent drainage and careful watering. Avoid overwatering, especially during its winter resting period.
