🌿 Euphorbia ritchiei subsp. nyambensis Care

Euphorbia ritchiei subsp. nyambensis, previously known as Monadenium ritchiei subsp. nyambense, is a fascinating, compact succulent native to Kenya, East Africa. It is particularly popular among succulent collectors for its unusual stems and attractive flowers.

This dwarf, clumping succulent develops a thick, fleshy rootstock from which numerous short, upright stems emerge. The stems are pale green, thick and covered in distinctive knobby tubercles, creating an interesting textured appearance. The plant gradually spreads through underground shoots, eventually forming dense clusters.

One of its most attractive features is its deep pink flowers, which contrast beautifully with the pale green stems.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light

Prefers bright indirect light to partial shade. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly gentle morning sun, but should be protected from intense afternoon sunlight. Too much sudden exposure to direct sun can cause scorching.

💧 Watering

Water during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings. It appreciates occasional watering during warm weather but is sensitive to prolonged moisture around its roots.

Reduce watering considerably during winter and keep the plant almost completely dry during its dormant period.

🪴 Soil

Requires a very well-draining, mineral-rich growing medium. A mixture containing pumice, lava rock, coarse sand and a small amount of organic potting material works well.

Avoid heavy soils that retain excessive moisture. Good airflow around the roots is important.

🌡️ Temperature

Prefers warm growing conditions and is not frost tolerant. It can tolerate cooler temperatures when kept dry, but prolonged cold and wet conditions should be avoided. Protect from temperatures approaching freezing.

🌸 Flowering

Produces distinctive deep pink to reddish-pink flowers (cyathia), which appear near the growing tips. The colourful flowers are particularly attractive against the pale green stems.

🌱 Feeding

Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth.

✂️ Maintenance

This species naturally produces underground shoots and gradually forms dense clumps. It benefits from a wider pot rather than a particularly deep one, allowing room for its spreading growth habit.

🌿 Propagation

Can be propagated from offsets, stem cuttings or seed. When separating offsets, allow damaged or cut surfaces to dry and heal before placing them in a suitable growing medium. Keep newly separated sections relatively dry until roots establish.

🍂 Dormancy

The plant may drop its leaves when conditions become dry or when its growing environment changes. This is generally normal. Reduce watering during dormancy and gradually resume as new growth appears.

⚠️ Important

Like other Euphorbias, this plant produces milky latex sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Avoid direct contact and keep it away from children and pets.

🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip

Unlike many desert-type Euphorbias, Euphorbia ritchiei subsp. nyambensis appreciates bright light with some protection from intense sunlight.

Its natural habitat consists of rocky slopes with seasonal summer rainfall and dry winters. Recreating this seasonal watering pattern, together with a mineral-rich growing medium, will help maintain healthy, compact growth.

Plants on offer: 6-10cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil.
