🌿 Euphorbia restricta Care
Euphorbia restricta is a distinctive, dwarf succulent endemic to Limpopo, South Africa. It is a relatively uncommon species that grows naturally in the Wolkberg and Strydpoort mountain regions.
It forms a low-growing, compact clump with a thick, tuberous root system and numerous short, branching stems. The stems are blue-grey to grey-green, with four to six prominent angles and distinctive paired spines along their ridges. New spines are often reddish-brown, gradually becoming grey as they mature.
Small yellow flowers appear near the growing tips, adding seasonal interest to this unusual succulent. Mature plants generally remain below 30 cm tall.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
Prefers bright light to partial shade. Provide several hours of direct morning sunlight, with protection from extremely intense afternoon sun, particularly during hot summers. Good light encourages compact growth and helps maintain the attractive stem colouring.
💧 Watering
Water during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry out between waterings. It appreciates occasional thorough watering during warm weather but is particularly susceptible to rot if kept too wet.
Reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy. Avoid frequent watering during cold weather.
🪴 Soil
Requires a porous, very well-draining growing medium. A mixture containing pumice, coarse sand, fine gravel and a little succulent potting soil works well.
Its natural habitat consists of shallow, humus-rich soil in crevices between dolomite rocks. A mineral-rich growing medium with good drainage is particularly suitable.
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm growing conditions and should be protected from frost. It can tolerate cooler conditions when kept dry, but prolonged cold and wet weather should be avoided.
🌸 Flowering
Produces small, attractive yellow flowers (cyathia) near the stem tips. Flowering generally occurs during late winter and early spring.
🌱 Feeding
Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage weak, soft growth.
✂️ Maintenance
This is a naturally compact, branching succulent that requires very little pruning. It produces offsets readily and can gradually develop into an attractive clump.
🌿 Propagation
Can be propagated from stem cuttings or seed. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before placing cuttings into a dry, well-draining growing medium. Seed propagation is another option.
⚠️ Important
Like other Euphorbias, E. restricta produces a milky latex sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Avoid direct contact and keep the plant away from children and pets.
🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
Unlike many larger, sun-loving Euphorbias, Euphorbia restricta naturally grows among mountain rocks in a cooler, mistbelt environment. It appreciates bright light, some protection from intense summer sun and excellent drainage.
Plants on offer: 5-7cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil.
