🌿 Euphorbia makallensis Care
Euphorbia makallensis, commonly known as the Sausage Plant, is an unusual, compact succulent native to the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is particularly popular among succulent collectors for its distinctive growth habit and attractive geometric stems.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Plenty of bright light encourages compact growth and helps maintain its attractive, dense shape. It can tolerate some shade, but insufficient light may result in looser growth. Acclimatise plants gradually when moving them into stronger sunlight.
💧 Watering
Water during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings. It appreciates occasional watering during warm weather but is drought-tolerant once established.
Reduce watering considerably during winter dormancy, particularly in cold conditions. Avoid prolonged wetness around the roots.
🪴 Soil
Requires a well-draining, sandy or gritty growing medium. A mixture of cactus potting soil, pumice, coarse sand and fine gravel works well.
Although relatively adaptable, it performs best in a porous growing medium that does not retain excessive moisture.
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm conditions but can tolerate some cooler temperatures when kept dry. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet weather.
🌸 Flowering
Produces small yellow to yellowish-orange flowers near the growing tips. The flowers are relatively inconspicuous compared with its unusual, densely clustered stems. Flowering generally occurs during late winter and spring under suitable growing conditions.
🌱 Feeding
Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth.
✂️ Maintenance
This species naturally produces numerous offsets and gradually develops into a dense, rounded mound. It requires very little pruning. Allow sufficient room for the plant to spread as it matures.
🌿 Propagation
Can be propagated from offsets or stem cuttings. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before planting in a dry, well-draining growing medium.
⚠️ Important
Like other Euphorbias, E. makallensis produces a milky latex sap that can cause skin and eye irritation and is harmful if ingested. Avoid direct contact and keep the plant away from children and pets.
🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
One of the most attractive features of Euphorbia makallensis is its ability to form dense, rounded clusters. Providing plenty of sunlight encourages a compact, cushion-like growth habit. Avoid overwatering and ensure excellent drainage, particularly during winter dormancy.
Plants on offer: 6-10cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil.
