Euphorbia lugardiae
Description
Euphorbia lugardiae is a striking succulent shrub native to southern Africa. It forms upright, branching stems that are green to grey-green and often segmented with subtle ridges. The stems are spine free and segmented along the edges, giving the plant a slightly architectural appearance. Over time it can form a dense, bushy clump. Small yellow-green flowers (cyathia), typical of Euphorbias, appear near the stem tips during the growing season. Its sculptural form and drought tolerance make it a popular plant for succulent gardens and xeriscaping.
Growing Conditions
Light:
Prefers bright light to full sun. In very hot climates, light afternoon shade can prevent sun stress.
Water:
Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
Soil:
Requires very well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent mix with added sand or pumice works well.
Temperature:
Best suited to warm climates. Protect from frost, as prolonged cold can damage the stems.
Feeding:
A diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer can be applied during the active growing season.
Propagation:
Usually propagated from stem cuttings. Allow the cut end to dry and callus for several days before planting in dry, well-draining soil.
Note:
Like most Euphorbias, the milky sap is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes, so handle with care.
Plants on offer: 8-12cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil.
