🌿 Euphorbia huttoniae Care

Euphorbia huttoniae is a fascinating, small, clumping succulent endemic to the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is a relatively unusual species that develops a thick, underground stem base (caudex) from which numerous fleshy, cylindrical branches emerge.

The branches are generally spineless, green and covered in distinctive small, geometric tubercles. The plant has tiny, short-lived leaves that appear near the growing tips before dropping off. As it matures, it forms an attractive, spreading cluster that can reach approximately 20 cm in height and 50 cm across.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light

Prefers full sun to partial shade. A position with plenty of bright light and some direct morning sunlight encourages healthy growth. In extremely hot conditions, provide protection from intense afternoon sun.

💧 Watering

Water moderately during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings. Reduce watering during winter and cooler periods. Avoid keeping the soil constantly moist, as the thick underground stem is susceptible to rot.

🪴 Soil

Requires a very well-draining, gritty growing medium. A mixture containing pumice, coarse sand, lava grit and a small amount of succulent potting soil works well.

A deeper pot with good drainage is beneficial to accommodate its thick underground root system.

🌡️ Temperature

Prefers warm growing conditions and should be protected from frost. Good airflow and protection from prolonged cold, wet weather are important.

🌸 Flowering

Produces small, yellow to yellowish-green flowers (cyathia) near the tips of its branches. Flowering generally occurs between October and February in its natural habitat.

🌱 Feeding

Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth.

✂️ Maintenance

This species requires very little pruning. Allow it to develop naturally into a spreading clump. Remove damaged growth when necessary.

🌿 Propagation

Can be propagated from stem cuttings or seed. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before placing cuttings into a dry, well-draining growing medium.

⚠️ Important

Like other Euphorbias, E. huttoniae produces milky latex sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Avoid direct contact and keep the plant away from children and pets.

🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip

Euphorbia huttoniae is an interesting species for collectors who appreciate unusual, clumping succulents. Its thick underground base and spreading, spineless branches make it quite different from many of the more familiar Euphorbias.
