Euphorbia horrida

R75,00

Euphorbia horrida is a bold, sculptural succulent admired for its thick ribbed stems and striking spination. The plant forms upright, cylindrical stems that are usually blue-green to grey-green in colour, often growing in dense clumps over time. As a result, it develops a dramatic architectural presence that resembles certain cacti, despite belonging to the Euphorbia genus.

It is native to South Africa, particularly the Eastern Cape, where it grows in dry, rocky habitats with strong sunlight and excellent drainage. In addition, it is highly adapted to drought and arid growing conditions.

The stems are the main ornamental feature. They are strongly ribbed with prominent paired spines arranged neatly along the ridges. In addition, the blue-grey colouring becomes more intense under bright light, giving the plant a frosted appearance. Consequently, mature specimens develop exceptional texture and symmetry.

Small yellow-green cyathia appear near the stem tips during the growing season. However, the flowers are subtle and secondary to the dramatic stem structure.

Plant Essentials

Light: Bright light to full sun
Water: Sparingly; allow soil to dry fully between watering
Humidity: Prefers dry conditions
Soil: Very well-draining cactus or succulent mix
Growth: Upright clumping succulent
Best for: Xeriscapes, collector pots, and architectural displays

Growing Notes

Euphorbia horrida thrives in warm, dry conditions with excellent drainage. Additionally, strong light encourages compact growth and enhances the blue-grey stem colouring. Overwatering should be avoided, especially during colder months, as excess moisture may lead to rot.

Protect from harsh midday sun (young plants)
Although mature plants tolerate intense sunlight well, younger plants should be acclimated gradually to prevent scorching.
