Euphorbia horrida fma monstruosa
R125,00
Euphorbia horrida fma. monstruosa is a highly sculptural succulent valued for its irregular, ribbed stems and dramatic architectural form. The plant forms dense clumps of cylindrical to slightly twisted stems that are blue-green to grey-green in colour. These stems are deeply ridged and often grow in uneven, distorted patterns, which gives the plant its “monstrous” character. As a result, each specimen develops a unique and unpredictable structure.
It is native to South Africa, particularly the Eastern Cape and surrounding arid regions, where it grows in rocky, dry habitats with excellent drainage. In addition, it is well adapted to heat, drought, and strong sunlight.
Small yellow cyathia (Euphorbia flowers) appear near the upper parts of the stems during the growing season. In addition, the flowers are subtle and short-lived, so the plant is mainly grown for its striking stem structure rather than its blooms.

• Growth: Clumping, ribbed, irregular cylindrical stems
• Best for: Collector pots, rock gardens, and sculptural displays
Growing Notes
Euphorbia horrida fma. monstruosa thrives in warm, dry conditions with excellent drainage. Additionally, it prefers a strict wet-dry cycle, as excess moisture can quickly lead to rot. It is far more tolerant of drought than overwatering.
Protect from harsh midday sun
Although it tolerates strong light, intense midday heat in containers can sometimes cause stress or sunburn on exposed stems. Therefore, morning sun with light afternoon shade is often ideal in very hot climates.
Boho Blooms – Interesting Facts & Tips
• Genetic mutation form: The “monstruosa” growth is a natural mutation causing irregular stem development
• Water storage strategy: Thick stems store moisture to survive long dry periods
• Latex sap warning: Like all Euphorbias, it produces a milky sap that can irritate skin
Plants on offer: 5-7cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil.
