🌿 Euphorbia heptagona (Jansenville) Care
Euphorbia heptagona, commonly known as Klipnoors, is a spiny, branching succulent endemic to South Africa. The Jansenville form originates from the Eastern Cape, where it grows naturally in the dry Karoo and surrounding thicket vegetation.
It develops an upright, densely branching growth habit with cylindrical, green to grey-green stems. The stems have approximately six to eight subtle angles, with prominent paired spines along the ridges. Small, deciduous leaves appear briefly on new growth.
This species is particularly attractive because of its architectural shape and heavily spined branches. It can grow approximately 20–100 cm tall.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
Prefers full sun to bright light. Several hours of direct sunlight encourage strong growth and compact branching. In extremely hot conditions, some afternoon protection may be beneficial for container-grown plants.
💧 Watering
Water moderately during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering during winter and cooler periods. Avoid excessive moisture around the roots, as prolonged wet conditions can cause rot.
🪴 Soil
Requires a very well-draining, gritty growing medium. A mixture of succulent potting soil, coarse sand, pumice and fine gravel works well.
Its natural habitat consists of stony, north-facing slopes, so good drainage is particularly important.
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm, relatively dry conditions. It is adapted to the temperature fluctuations of the Karoo climate. Protect container-grown plants from severe frost and prolonged cold, wet weather.
🌸 Flowering
Produces small, inconspicuous green to reddish cyathia (the characteristic flower structures of Euphorbias). Flowering generally occurs between June and November in its natural habitat.
🌱 Feeding
Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth.
✂️ Pruning & Maintenance
Requires little pruning. Remove damaged or unwanted branches when necessary. Allow sufficient space for the plant to develop its naturally dense, branching structure.
🌿 Propagation
Can be propagated from seeds or stem cuttings. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before placing cuttings into a dry, well-draining growing medium.
⚠️ Important
Like other Euphorbias, E. heptagona produces a milky latex sap that can cause skin and eye irritation. Wear suitable protective gloves when handling or pruning and keep the plant away from children and pets.
🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
The Jansenville form of Euphorbia heptagona comes from a naturally rocky, semi-arid environment. Try to recreate these conditions by providing plenty of sunlight, gritty soil and careful watering. Excellent drainage and avoiding overwatering are key to keeping this beautiful Karoo succulent healthy.
