🌿 Euphorbia graniticola Care
Euphorbia graniticola is a fascinating, branching succulent shrub native to central Mozambique, where it grows naturally on exposed granite slopes. Its name, graniticola, refers to its granite-loving habitat.
It develops a thick, sometimes swollen main trunk with upright to spreading branches. The stems are distinctly four to six-angled, with attractive whitish spine shields along the ridges. New growth produces narrow leaves that eventually fall as the stems mature. Under suitable conditions, plants can reach approximately 2.5 metres in height.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
Prefers bright light to full sun. Several hours of direct sunlight encourage strong growth and well-developed stems. Young plants should be gradually acclimatised to direct sunlight to prevent scorching.
💧 Watering
Water during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering during winter and cooler periods. Avoid excessive moisture around the roots, as prolonged wet conditions can cause rot.
🪴 Soil
Requires a very well-draining, mineral-rich growing medium. A mixture containing pumice, coarse sand, fine gravel and a little potting soil works well. Its natural granite habitat means it is particularly suited to gritty, rocky growing conditions.
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm growing conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet weather. A sheltered position is recommended in areas with cold winters.
🌸 Flowering
Produces small, yellow flowers along the upper stem segments. Flowering generally occurs between August and October in its natural habitat in Mozambique.
🌱 Feeding
Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth.
✂️ Pruning & Maintenance
Generally requires minimal pruning. Remove damaged or unwanted branches when necessary. Allow sufficient space for the plant to develop its natural branching structure.
🌿 Propagation
Can be propagated from seed or stem cuttings. Stem cuttings should be allowed to dry and callus before planting in a suitable, well-draining growing medium.
⚠️ Important
Like other Euphorbias, E. graniticola produces a milky latex sap that can cause skin and eye irritation. Avoid direct contact and keep it away from children and pets.
🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
Euphorbia graniticola is particularly interesting because of its natural habitat on exposed granite slopes. To encourage healthy growth, recreate these conditions as much as possible by providing plenty of light, a gritty growing medium and excellent drainage. Avoid keeping the roots constantly moist.
Plants on offer: 8-12cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil.
