🌿 Euphorbia barnardii Care

Euphorbia barnardii is an attractive, stem-forming succulent native to South Africa. It develops an upright growth habit with fleshy, ribbed stems and distinctive spines along its ridges. As it matures, it can form a branching, shrub-like structure, making it an interesting addition to a succulent collection.

Like many South African Euphorbias, it is adapted to relatively dry growing conditions and benefits from plenty of sunlight, warmth and excellent drainage.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light
Prefers full sun to bright light. Several hours of direct sunlight encourage strong, compact growth. Young plants should be gradually acclimatised to intense sunlight to prevent scorching.

💧 Watering
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering during winter and cooler weather. Avoid keeping the roots continuously moist, as this can lead to rot.

🪴 Soil
Requires a very well-draining succulent mix. A combination of cactus soil, pumice, perlite and coarse grit works well. Good drainage is particularly important for preventing root problems.

🌿 Euphorbia barnardii Care

Euphorbia barnardii is a distinctive, slow-growing succulent shrub endemic to Limpopo, South Africa. It develops a thick, underground tuberous root system with several branching, fleshy stems. The stems have five to six prominent angles, with paired spines along their ridges and noticeable constrictions between segments.

This unusual species is particularly interesting to succulent collectors because of its architectural growth habit and attractive yellow flowers. Mature plants generally reach around 60–75 cm in height.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light
Prefers bright light to full sun. It grows naturally on rocky hillsides in exposed positions. Provide plenty of sunlight but offer protection from intense midday summer sun to prevent scorching.

💧 Watering
Water during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering during winter and colder periods. Avoid excessive moisture, particularly around the base of the plant.

🪴 Soil
Requires a very well-draining, gritty growing medium. A mixture of sandy soil, pumice, coarse grit and a small amount of succulent potting mix works well. Avoid heavy clay soils and anything that retains too much moisture.

🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm growing conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet weather. It is suited to summer-rainfall climates and benefits from a sheltered position during winter.

🌸 Flowering
Produces small, yellowish cyathia (the characteristic flower structures of Euphorbias). Mature plants generally flower between May and June, with seed capsules developing later in winter.

🌱 Feeding
Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage weak, soft growth.

✂️ Propagation
Can be propagated through seeds, stem cuttings and grafting. Seed propagation is a useful option for this species. Use fresh seed and a well-draining growing medium.

⚠️ Important
Like other Euphorbias, E. barnardii produces a milky latex sap that is poisonous and can cause severe skin and eye irritation. Avoid direct contact and keep the plant away from children and pets.
