Eulophia petersii
R250,00
Eulophia petersii is a very unusual orchid species that looks more like a succulent or desert plant than a typical orchid. It’s native to arid, sun-baked areas of eastern and southern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, growing in sandy soil and rock outcrops where very few orchids survive.
🌿 Description
-
Family: Orchidaceae (orchid family)
-
Form: Terrestrial orchid with a succulent habit — thick, water-storing pseudobulbs at the base from which leaves emerge.
-
Leaves: Tough, fleshy, fibrous leaves with sharp serrated edges that resemble aloe or sansevieria leaves.
-
Size: Mature plants can be fairly large, with pseudobulbs up to ~30 cm long and inflorescences sometimes over 2 m tall in the wild.
-
Flowers: Produced on tall spikes; flowers are usually green with reddish or brown markings and a lighter lip, and can be musky-scented. The appearance can vary between plants.
-
Habitat: Naturally found in hot, dry regions where it receives strong light and little water.
Because of these adaptations, many succulent growers treat it similarly to desert plants rather than typical orchids.
🌱 Growing & Care
🪴 Light
-
Bright light to full sun suits it best — it evolved in open, sunny habitats. In very hot climates, light shade in the hottest part of the day can help prevent leaf burn.
🌡 Temperature
-
Prefers warm conditions during active growth. Cooler, dry conditions in the “rest” period help stimulate future blooms. Most growers recommend temperatures above ~10–15 °C (50–60 °F).
💦 Watering
-
During the active growing season (spring/summer) give water when the medium has dried — deep watering but only when dry.
-
In winter or dormant periods, greatly reduce watering or omit it entirely — the plant can tolerate long dry spells. Overwatering in winter often leads to root rot.
🪨 Soil / Potting
-
Use a very well-draining medium — coarse mixes with sand, gritty material, perlite or cactus/succulent mix are ideal.
-
Deep pots are better than shallow ones because the thick roots like to grow downward.
🌿 Fertilizer
-
During active growth, a balanced succulent or orchid fertilizer at half strength every few weeks helps. Do not fertilize during dormancy.
🪴 Dormancy
-
In winter, this plant naturally goes dormant; leaves may slow growth or reduce. Less water and slightly cooler conditions encourage this cycle and improve flowering later.
🌵 General Tips
-
Because its roots and pseudobulbs store water, this orchid is more forgiving of drought than many others. However, it does not like being wet for long.
-
In cultivation, it’s often grown like a succulent or cactus rather than a moisture-loving orchid.
-
Propagation is usually by division of clumps rather than from seed.
