Cryptanthus ‘Elaine’

R95,00

Cryptanthus ‘Elaine’ is a striking terrestrial bromeliad prized for its compact, star-shaped rosette and rich foliage colour. The plant forms a low-growing, symmetrical rosette that hugs the soil surface. In addition, the broad leaves arch gently outward and feature finely serrated margins, giving the plant a refined but sculptural appearance.

The foliage is the main attraction. Leaves typically display deep burgundy to reddish-brown tones with subtle darker banding or mottling across the surface. Under brighter light, the colours intensify noticeably. Consequently, the plant can develop an almost metallic appearance with exceptional depth and contrast. The leaf surface also has a slightly textured, matte finish, which enhances its ornamental appeal.

Like other Cryptanthus species, ‘Elaine’ produces small white to pale lilac flowers nestled deep within the centre of the rosette. However, the blooms are subtle and secondary to the dramatic foliage display.

Growing Notes

Cryptanthus ‘Elaine’ thrives in warm, humid conditions with good airflow. Additionally, brighter filtered light enhances the burgundy and reddish tones in the foliage. Keep the soil lightly moist, but avoid soggy conditions that may lead to root rot.

Protect from harsh midday sun
Although it enjoys bright light, direct intense midday sun can scorch the foliage. Therefore, filtered light or gentle morning sun is ideal for maintaining strong colour and healthy leaves.
