🌼 Bulbine narcissifolia Care
Bulbine narcissifolia, commonly known as Strap-leaved Bulbine or Snake Flower, is a hardy, indigenous South African succulent perennial belonging to the Asphodelaceae family.
It is a stemless plant with a short, rhizomatous base. Its attractive grey-green, strap-shaped leaves are semi-succulent and often loosely twisted. During flowering, it produces dense, upright spikes of bright yellow, star-shaped flowers, beautifully contrasted by prominent white papery bracts covering the developing flower buds.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
-
Prefers full sun for healthy growth and abundant flowering.
-
Tolerates light shade, but flowering may be reduced.
-
Particularly suitable for sunny rockeries and water-wise gardens.
💧 Watering
-
Water moderately during active growth.
-
Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering.
-
Once established, it is highly drought tolerant.
-
Reduce watering during winter, especially if the plant becomes dormant.
🪴 Soil
-
Requires well-draining soil.
-
Grows well in sandy, loamy or rocky soil.
-
A humus-rich growing medium encourages stronger growth and more prolific flowering.
-
Avoid permanently waterlogged conditions.
🌡️ Temperature
-
Very adaptable and suitable for a wide range of temperatures.
-
Tolerates frost and drought once established.
-
Well suited to South African summer-rainfall gardens.
-
Some populations become deciduous during colder winters, with fresh foliage emerging in spring.
🌼 Flowering
-
Produces dense, upright flower spikes reaching approximately 50 cm tall.
-
Flowers are bright yellow, small and star-shaped.
-
The flowers have distinctive hairy stamens.
-
Flowering generally occurs during spring and summer, with flowering periods varying according to rainfall and growing conditions.
🌿 Feeding
-
Apply a light application of balanced fertiliser during active growth.
-
Compost can be added around established plants to improve soil quality.
-
Avoid excessive feeding, as this is naturally a hardy, low-maintenance species.
🌱 Propagation
-
Best propagated from seed.
-
Sow seeds in spring or early summer in a well-draining growing medium.
-
Germination is usually relatively quick, often within one to two weeks.
-
Established clumps can also be divided in early spring.
-
Seed-grown plants may flower within their first year under favourable conditions.
🌼 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
This is an excellent choice for sunny, water-wise gardens. Plant several together for a beautiful display of yellow flower spikes. It also combines well with other indigenous succulents and drought-tolerant grasses.
Do not be concerned if the foliage dies back during winter. Some populations naturally become dormant during colder conditions and will produce fresh leaves when warmer weather returns.
