🌸 Tulbaghia maritima Care
Tulbaghia maritima, commonly known as Garden Route Garlic or Coast Wild Garlic, is a beautiful South African indigenous perennial. It is naturally found along the Eastern Cape coastline, where it grows in sandy soil among rocks, often in coastal forest and near river mouths.
It forms small clumps of glossy, dark green, strap-like leaves that tend to grow outward rather than upright. During summer, it produces delicate clusters of shell-pink to pale lilac flowers, occasionally white, on slender flower stalks.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
-
Prefers full sun for the best flowering.
-
Tolerates partial shade, although flowering may be reduced.
-
In very hot conditions, some afternoon shade is beneficial.
💧 Watering
-
Water regularly during active growth, especially in warm weather.
-
Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
-
Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant.
-
Reduce watering during cooler months, but avoid keeping the soil constantly dry if the plant remains actively growing.
🪴 Soil
-
Prefers fertile, well-draining soil.
-
A loamy soil enriched with compost is ideal.
-
Avoid waterlogged conditions, as these can cause the underground roots and bulbs to rot.
🌡️ Temperature
-
Enjoys warm growing conditions.
-
Tolerates light frost once established, although foliage may be damaged by severe frost.
-
Protect container-grown plants during particularly cold weather.
🌸 Flowering
-
Produces clusters of delicate white, star-shaped flowers on slender stalks.
-
Flowering is generally strongest during the warmer months and can continue over an extended period.
-
Removing faded flower stalks helps keep the plant tidy and may encourage further flowering.
🌿 Feeding
-
Apply compost around the plant during the growing season.
-
A balanced, general-purpose fertiliser can encourage healthy foliage and flowering.
-
Avoid excessive feeding, particularly with high-nitrogen fertilisers.
🌱 Propagation
-
Easily propagated by dividing established clumps.
-
Divide larger clumps when they become overcrowded, preferably as new growth begins.
-
Can also be grown from seed, although this takes longer to produce flowering-sized plants.
🌼 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
Although this species is naturally adapted to coastal conditions, it can also grow successfully in inland gardens when given suitable drainage and protection from extreme conditions. Avoid disturbing established clumps too frequently, as they benefit from time to settle and develop.
🌿 Interesting Botanical Facts
-
Tulbaghia maritima is endemic to South Africa and naturally occurs in the Eastern Cape.
-
Its name maritima means “of the sea”, referring to its coastal habitat.
-
Unlike the more familiar Tulbaghia violacea, it has shorter, broader leaves and smaller flowers.
-
Its leaves release a distinctive garlic-like smell when crushed.
A species worth protecting: Tulbaghia maritima is assessed as Vulnerable on the South African Red List because of its restricted natural distribution and ongoing coastal habitat loss. Always choose responsibly propagated nursery plants rather than wild-collected specimens.
Bulbs on offer: 3 dry bulbs. Shipped without pot or soil.
