🌸 Tulbaghia ‘Flamingo’ Care

Tulbaghia ‘Flamingo’ is an elegant, clump-forming perennial valued for its striking variegated foliage and delicate, fragrant blooms. The plant forms neat tufts of narrow, strap-like leaves that are green with soft silver-white margins. Additionally, the foliage releases a mild garlic scent when crushed, which is a signature trait of the Tulbaghia genus.

In contrast to its refined foliage, it produces airy clusters of star-shaped flowers in soft lilac to pale purple shades. These blooms rise on slender stems above the leaves and appear mainly in the warmer months. Consequently, the plant offers both year-round structure and seasonal floral display, making it especially rewarding in mixed plantings.

Growing Notes

Tulbaghia violacea ‘Silver Lace’ grows best in bright conditions with well-draining soil. Additionally, it is drought tolerant once established and responds well to regular trimming of older leaves. This encourages fresh, vibrant growth and keeps the plant looking tidy throughout the year.

Protect from harsh midday sun
Although it tolerates full sun, intense South African midday heat can stress the foliage in extreme conditions. Therefore, morning sun with light afternoon shade is ideal for best variegation and growth.

Tulbaghia ‘Flamingo’, also sold as Flamingo Society Garlic, is a striking South African ornamental perennial. It is especially valued for its colourful foliage, with bright lime-green, grass-like leaves and vivid pink to purple-pink colouring at the base. It also produces clusters of delicate pink-mauve, star-shaped flowers.

It forms an upright, clump-forming plant and is attractive even when it is not flowering. It belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family.

🌿 Interesting Botanical Fact

‘Tulbaghia Flamingo’ is a specially selected ornamental hybrid developed in Pretoria, South Africa. It originated from self-pollination of the cultivar ‘Kilimanjaro’. Its distinctive lime-green foliage, bright pink leaf bases and pink-mauve flowers make it quite different from the typical green-leaved Wild Garlic.

Taxonomy note: It is generally sold as Tulbaghia ‘Flamingo’ or Tulbaghia hybrid ‘Flamingo’, rather than simply as a standard form of Tulbaghia violacea.
