Huernia longii subsp echidnopsioides

R65,00

Huernia longii subsp. echidnopsioides is a captivating desert succulent admired for its long, spreading stems and unusual star‑shaped flowers. The blooms are typically pale yellow to cream with dense, reddish‑brown to maroon spotted patterns on the corolla lobes. In addition, the central corona is often a bright yellow, creating contrast and visual depth. These striking, fleshy flowers make this species a standout in any succulent collection.

The plant forms long, branching stems that grow close to the soil surface and often trail outward. These stems are usually green to grey‑green with slightly angular edges and a sculptural texture. Consequently, even when not in bloom, the plant has architectural interest. Its spreading habit makes it ideal for shallow pots, rock gardens, or mixed succulent arrangements.

Growing Notes

Huernia longii subsp. echidnopsioides thrives in bright, sunny conditions and very well‑draining soil. Additionally, it prefers dry periods with only occasional watering. Water only when the medium is fully dry, especially in cooler months, to avoid rot.

Protect from harsh midday sun
Although it enjoys bright light, the intense South African midday sun can scorch stems. Therefore, morning sun with light afternoon shade is ideal for maintaining healthy growth and balanced colour.

Boho Blooms – Interesting Facts & Tips

• Fly‑pollinated blooms: Like many stapeliads, the patterned flowers are adapted to attract flies for pollination based on colour and scent.
• Pattern intensity varies with light: Brighter light often increases the contrast of spots and markings on the flowers.
• Stems root as they spread: When creeping stems contact the substrate, they often form new roots, helping the plant slowly form thicker clusters.

Plants on offer: ±3 stems 4-6cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil. May or may not currently have flowers/buds.
