🌿 Euphorbia ritchiei subsp. nyambensis ‘Variegated’ Care
Euphorbia ritchiei subsp. nyambensis ‘Variegated’, also known as Monadenium ritchiei subsp. nyambense ‘Variegata’, is a beautiful and unusual clumping succulent prized for its colourful stems and foliage.
It forms compact clusters of short, fleshy stems covered in prominent, rounded tubercles. The variegated form displays attractive combinations of cream, yellow, pale green and darker green markings on its stems and leaves. New growth may also show subtle pink or reddish tones.
Another highlight is its bright pink flowers, which contrast beautifully with the variegated foliage. It is an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate unusual and colourful Euphorbias.
🌱 Growing & Care
☀️ Light
Prefers bright indirect light to partial shade. Gentle morning sunlight is beneficial, but protect the variegated foliage from harsh afternoon sun, which can cause scorching. Good light helps maintain attractive variegation and encourages compact growth.
Variegated plants generally have less chlorophyll than fully green plants, so avoid excessively dark growing conditions.
💧 Watering
Water during the active growing season, allowing the growing medium to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly rather than giving frequent small amounts.
Reduce watering considerably during winter dormancy. Avoid keeping the roots continuously moist, as this species is particularly susceptible to rot.
🪴 Soil
Requires a very well-draining, mineral-rich growing medium. A mixture containing pumice, lava rock, coarse sand and a small amount of organic potting material works well.
A wider pot is preferable as the plant spreads through underground shoots and gradually develops into a dense clump.
🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm growing conditions and is sensitive to frost. Protect from freezing temperatures and prolonged cold, wet weather. Avoid placing the plant in a cold, damp environment during winter.
🌸 Flowering
Produces distinctive bright pink to deep reddish-pink flowers (cyathia) near the growing tips. The colourful flowers provide a lovely contrast against the cream and green variegated stems.
🌱 Feeding
Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft growth.
✂️ Maintenance
This species naturally produces underground offsets and gradually forms larger clumps. Remove damaged stems when necessary and allow sufficient room for new growth.
🌿 Propagation
Can be propagated from offsets, stem cuttings or seed. When separating offsets or taking cuttings, allow the cut surfaces to dry and callus before planting in a dry, well-draining growing medium.
Variegated plants are best propagated from vegetative growth to retain their variegated characteristics. Seed-grown plants may not retain the same variegation.
🍂 Dormancy
The plant may lose some or all of its leaves during dry periods or seasonal dormancy. This is normal. Reduce watering while dormant and gradually resume watering when new growth appears.
⚠️ Important
Like other Euphorbias, this plant produces milky latex sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Avoid direct contact and keep it away from children and pets.
🌿 Boho Blooms Growing Tip
Variegated Euphorbia ritchiei appreciates a little more protection from intense sunlight than its fully green counterpart. Provide plenty of bright light to maintain attractive colouring, but avoid harsh afternoon exposure.
The key to growing this beautiful variety successfully is bright filtered light, excellent drainage and careful seasonal watering.
Plants on offer: 6-10cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil.
