🌵 Duvalia modesta Care

Duvalia modesta, commonly known as the Modest Duvalia, is a small, mat-forming South African stapeliad belonging to the Apocynaceae family. It forms compact clumps of short, fleshy, dark green to slightly purplish stems with four to five rounded, toothed angles.

Its unusual flowers are relatively small, measuring approximately 1.5–2.5 cm across. They are typically dark chocolate-brown to purplish-brown, with petals that bend backwards and may have delicate purple hairs along their edges.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright light with partial sunlight.

  • Gentle morning sun is ideal.

  • Provide light shade during the hottest part of the day.

  • In nature, it often grows beneath small shrubs or among rocks.

  • Good light encourages compact growth and flowering.

💧 Watering

  • Water moderately during active growth.

  • Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings.

  • It appreciates additional moisture during warm growing periods, provided drainage is excellent.

  • Reduce watering during cooler months.

  • Avoid keeping the plant wet in cold weather, as this can lead to stem and root rot.

🪴 Soil

  • Requires a loose, gritty and well-draining growing medium.

  • Use a cactus and succulent mix amended with pumice, perlite or coarse grit.

  • Its shallow root system makes shallow containers suitable.

  • Terracotta pots are useful because they allow the soil to dry more quickly.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Prefers warm growing conditions.

  • Protect from frost and prolonged cold.

  • It can tolerate brief temperatures below 5°C if kept completely dry, but warmer conditions are preferable.

  • Good air circulation helps prevent fungal problems.

🌸 Flowering

  • Produces small, distinctive, star-shaped flowers, approximately 1.5–2.5 cm across.

  • Flowers are dark chocolate-brown to purplish-brown.

  • The petals bend backwards and may have fine purple hairs along their edges.

  • Flowers generally develop around the middle portions of younger stems.

  • Mature plants can produce several flowers in succession.

🌿 Feeding

  • Feed lightly with a diluted succulent fertiliser during active growth.

  • Choose a potassium-rich, low-nitrogen fertiliser.

  • Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage soft, weak growth.

🌱 Propagation

  • Easily propagated from stem cuttings.

  • Allow cut surfaces to dry before planting.

  • Lay the stems on top of a gritty growing medium rather than burying them.

  • Keep warm and allow roots to develop before increasing watering.

  • Can also be propagated from seed.

🌵 Boho Blooms Growing Tip

Duvalia modesta is a lovely compact stapeliad for shallow succulent containers. Give it plenty of bright light, some protection from intense afternoon sunshine and excellent drainage. During warm weather, consistent but careful watering can encourage healthy growth and flowering. Keep it much drier during cold periods.

Interesting botanical fact: The name modesta means modest or unassuming, referring to the relatively small flowers of this species. It is naturally found mainly in the Eastern Cape and parts of the central Karoo.

Plants on offer: ±3 stems 3-5cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil. May or may not currently have flowers/buds.
