🌵 Ballyanthus prognathus Care

Ballyanthus prognathus is a rare, small-growing succulent in the Apocynaceae family and is closely related to the stapeliads. Native to northern Somalia, it grows naturally in dry habitats. It forms small clumps of short, fleshy, grey-green stems, often with attractive purple mottling. Its unusual flowers are dark purplish-brown, with a fleshy star-shaped appearance and fine hairs along the petal edges.

🌱 Growing & Care

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright light with plenty of indirect sunlight.

  • Can tolerate some gentle morning sun.

  • Protect from intense afternoon sunlight, particularly during very hot weather.

  • Good light encourages compact growth and flowering.

💧 Watering

  • Water during the warmer growing period, allowing the growing medium to dry out between waterings.

  • Avoid frequent watering and never leave the roots sitting in wet soil.

  • Reduce watering during cooler months, especially when growth slows.

    • Can be propagated from stem cuttings.

    • Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before placing cuttings in a dry, well-draining growing medium.

    • Keep the medium only slightly moist once rooting begins.

Water sparingly if the stems begin to soften or show signs of stress, and check the roots for rot if this persists.

      🪴 Soil

      • Requires a very well-draining, mineral-rich growing medium.

      • Use a cactus and succulent mix with added pumice, perlite or coarse grit.

      • A shallow pot with drainage holes is suitable for its small, clumping growth habit.

      🌡️ Temperature

      • Prefers warm growing conditions.

      • Protect from frost and prolonged cold.

      • Good air circulation is important, particularly in humid conditions.

      🌸 Flowering

      • Produces unusual, dark purplish-brown flowers with a fleshy, star-shaped structure.

      • Flowers are generally carried near the growing tips of the stems.

      • Flowering is more likely when the plant receives sufficient light and experiences a suitable seasonal growing cycle.

      🌿 Feeding

      • Feed sparingly with a diluted, low-nitrogen succulent fertiliser during active growth.

      • Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage weak growth.

      🌱 Propagation

    🌵 Boho Blooms Growing Tip

Ballyanthus prognathus is an unusual collector’s succulent that benefits from careful watering and excellent drainage. Avoid treating it like a moisture-loving plant. A warm, bright growing position and a gritty soil mix will help keep its compact stems healthy.

Note: Kew currently accepts the name Ballyanthus prognathus, although its taxonomic history includes the earlier names Stapelia prognatha and Orbea prognatha.

Plants on offer: ±3 stems 3-5cm rooted. Shipped without pot or soil. May or may not currently have flowers/buds.
