🌸 Zephyranthes formosissima
Description
Zephyranthes formosissima, commonly known as the Aztec or Southern Cross Lily, is a charming bulbous plant prized for its elegant, crocus-like flowers. It produces narrow, grass-like foliage and beautiful deep pink to reddish-purple, funnel-shaped flowers, which appear on slender stems, often following rain or periods of good moisture. The flowers add a lovely splash of colour to rockeries, borders, containers and succulent gardens.
🌱 Growing & Care
Light:
Prefers full sun to light shade. Plenty of sunlight encourages good flowering.
Water:
Water regularly during the growing season, particularly when the plant is actively growing and flowering. Allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Keep considerably drier while dormant.
Soil:
Plant in well-draining, fertile soil. A good bulb or succulent mix works well, provided it doesn’t remain waterlogged.
Temperature:
Enjoys warm conditions. Protect bulbs from severe frost, particularly when grown in containers.
Feeding:
Feed with a balanced, diluted fertilizer during active growth to encourage healthy foliage and flowering.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by offsets/bulblets that develop around the parent bulb. These can be separated when the plant is dormant or during repotting.
Flowering:
Flowering can be somewhat unpredictable and is often triggered by rain or a change in watering, giving Rain Lilies their common name.
🌿 Boho Blooms Tip:
Don’t be too quick to discard the plant when the foliage dies back. Zephyranthes can go dormant between growing periods and will return when conditions become favourable again.
